A stump grinder is a heavy piece of equipment weighing up to 5000 lbs. This equipment is remote driven and is on rubber tracks or tires. This equipment can fit through a 36" gate on level ground but cannot go down stairs or climb a hill greater than 20 degrees. If the ground is saturated or muddy, the equipment will leave ruts or can get stuck. Plywood may be placed over grass to avoid damage.

Stump grinding is the process of turning a stump into mulch. A large machine equipped with a hydraulic head that has carbide teeth spins at a rate of 3000 RPM and sweeps over the stump, thereby grinding off layers of wood. The grinding head moves back and forth/up and down until there is no longer a stump sticking up and a pile of mulch is in its place.

Standard grinding takes the stump down 6"- 8" below grade. Surface roots can be ground as well. The end product is a pile of mulch generally larger than the stump was originally. This mulch can be raked down, relocated or removed entirely.

Once new dirt is introduced into the area, shrubs, flowers or grass can be planted where the stump once was.

A new tree generally cannot be planted in the same spot unless the root structure below the surface is completely removed by a landscaper or grading company.

Be aware that anything that is below the surface will be damaged if the cutting head hits it. Irrigation, wiring, plumbing and gas lines should be located or noted prior to grinding a stump.
